The First Fire of the Season

The first fire of autumn changes a room. There is the small crackle as the wood catches, the shifting light across the hearth, and the gradual warmth that draws everyone towards the same chairs.

After an October walk through the Cotswolds, it is a welcome homecoming. Boots are left by the door, a favourite jumper replaces the coat, and the kettle goes on. Outside, leaves gather along the garden path. Inside, there is time to sit for a while.

A fireside evening needs very little dressing. Bring a comfortable chair closer, put a book within reach and set a cup on the side table. We love the quiet combination of worn wood, soft wool and candlelight: familiar textures that feel particularly at home in a country sitting room.

A candle on the table adds a smaller, steadier pool of light alongside the movement of the fire. Choose a fragrance you enjoy returning to, and let it become part of these evenings, whether you are reading alone or catching up with someone over tea.

There need not be a special occasion. Sometimes an ordinary October evening, with a fire going and nowhere else to be, is quite enough.
