When the Evenings Draw In
There is a moment in October when the evening seems to arrive all at once. A walk that began in soft afternoon light ends beneath a blue-grey sky, and the windows of honey-coloured cottages begin to glow along the lane. Back at home, the curtains are drawn a little earlier.
These are the evenings for rediscovering a favourite corner. A lamp beside the armchair, a wool throw brought down from the cupboard, a book that has been waiting patiently on the table. Nothing elaborate; just a few familiar things that make staying in feel like something to look forward to.
Lighting a candle can become part of that change of pace. Strike a match, watch the flame settle, and let a familiar fragrance accompany the quieter part of the day. The washing-up can wait until after a chapter. The phone can stay in another room.
Here in the Cotswolds, October gives us plenty of reasons to linger outdoors, from turning leaves to the last warmth on a stone wall. But coming home has its own pleasures. As the nights draw in, there is something lovely about making a little more of the evening.
